Now focus everybody Assuming you're reading this article because you've made the decision to by a rifle scope, we'll forego a lengthy description of why one would buy a Zeiss rifle scope. In a couple of words, it's easier. A scope or red-dot sight provides more accurate shooting, is easier on the eyes, and eliminates the need to line up rear and front metallic sights with the target. Whether your new mounted sight magnifies or not, lining up the reticles is a far sight easier than metallic sights. If you want to do it the old-fashioned way, just ditch the rifle scope. So what are some parameters for choosing the right product for your needs? White tail deer - Generally, you want to keep to a simple 3-9x rifle scope. That is, magnification for three to nine times. A 3x rifle scope allows plenty of magnification without inhibiting light transmission. Going up to 9x is plenty for longer shots. Be wary of those selling you rifle scopes for deer hunting in the 10-20x range. You'll be buying something you don't need. Lower is often better - Mind the lowest setting on the rifle scope you are considering. Chances are, you'll be using this more, and you don't want to have a target that is a mere eight yards away appear as a fuzzy patch. Higher intensities also mean lower amounts of light, which can add to the frustration. | ![]() |
Handgun - Most common for handgun scopes are simple, fixed 2x rifle scopes. You'll need loads of practice to be effective shooting a handgun with a scope, and more magnification will probably require more time than even dedicated shooters can commit.
Shotgun scopes - Shotgun scopes are mainly used for short-range deer hunting, with slugs, and turkey hunting. Like the handgun, a fixed 2x scope is standard. Some go with variable rifle scopes from 2-7x or even 3-9x, but this is often completely unnecessary.
Your options are vast, so take your time and learn as much as possible. Leupold scopes and Nikon scopes are popular, but there are plenty of other brands out there making great products. Stick to what you need and you won't be disappointed.
