How to Boresight a Rifle Scope

The task of boresighting a Nikon rifle scope is a fairly simple one that, when done properly, will result in much more effective targeting. For those who are unfamiliar with the importance of proper boresighting, a tiny error on the barrel of your rifle will be magnified exponentially with the distance of your target.

All you need is your rifle and your rifle scope. The scope or rifle comes with hardware for mounting; simply mount your Leupold rifle scope in such a way that no other components of the gun will get in the way.

Resting the gun on a solid, level surface, focus on an object about 50 feet away through the bore of the rifle. Hold the gun steadily after you have carefully aligned it. Now take a look at the same object through the rifle scope, making sure the gun stays perfectly still. Carefully adjust the Bushnell rifle scope until the crosshairs are focused on precisely the same object.

Repeat this process several times, with many different objects and slightly different distances, until you are certain you have an accurate setting. Now check your setting by firing the weapon at a target using the night vision scope. If you've accurately hit your target, good job. Otherwise, simply keep repeating the procedure. Chances are, you've moved the gun while adjusting the rifle scope. Have somebody watch you so they can tell you if the rifle moved.

A boring tool is a helpful, accurate laser that will boresight your rifle very quickly. While it is expensive, it is worth the investment if you use your rifle frequently and remove the rifle scope for storage.
